Papineau Expressway is an alternate route to Route 335 and to Pie-IX Blvd (R-125) from East Montréal Island to Laval.
South of Henri-Bourassa Blvd., A-19 is a Controlled-access surface urban boulevard with some at-grades and traffic lights.
North of Henri-Bourassa Blvd. until Laval Autoroute (A-440), it's a complete freeway wich counts 6 lanes. North of A-440, it's a Super-4. It links A-440 with Papineau Avenue Expressway
( Route 335), to Bois-Des-Fillions.
In 1970, one stated the possiblity of an expressway that would have linked Lower Laurentides to South Shore,
in Papineau Ave. corridor. Thus, A-19 would have crossed St. Lawrence on Jacques-Cartier Bridge and would have linked northern
suburbs to Montreal By-Pass Rd. (old A-30, south shore) by the old Route 9 (actual R-116 freeway). That is why on A-640, dirt ramps and unused viaducts can be found @ Route 335. That is also probably why R-116 is a freeway between Jacques-Cartier Bridge and A-30.
